I’m talking about the book (The Long Tail), not the phenomenon the book is about. Naked Conversations, by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel, was published earlier this year and was doing quite well for us. Then Robert left Microsoft. As I said back then, if the sales spike was any indication, I wish he’d change jobs more frequently.
The book settled into a nice backlist pace and then we started seeing it climbing rapidly on Amazon once again this week. The likely culprit: Being connected to the red-hot Chris Anderson book, The Long Tail. For a period of time this week Naked Conversations was the featured book in Amazon’s “buy-x-get-y” program, where they recommend two books are “Better Together.” The Long Tail is currently #4 for all books on Amazon, so we benefited greatly from being part of that book’s product page on Amazon.
All good things come to an end, of course, and now John Battelle’s The Search is appearing as the “buy-x-get-y” title for The Long Tail on Amazon. It too is a fine book and I see that its ranking jumped from #1,165 yesterday to #974 today, no doubt also in part due to The Long Tail.
