Excellent advice. Thanks for defining the steps so succinctly.

Great interview--the book looks like a great resource. It's nice to hear that I might actually be on the right track as I re-build my platform after a hiatus from publishing.

Joe,

Help for clarifying "platform"; the word/concept seem to have appeared from thin air with very little gestation.

A few questions:

1) In the realm of rising above static, how might a portfolio of writing on niche topics or unique genre be the basis for a more mainstream platform?

2) How might an author objectively check on progress towards building the desired platform?

Thanks and looking forward to your responses,

Bill

Bill, let me try to answer your questions. First, I suppose it's how well-known you are on the niche/unique genre you're talking about. If you've written enough about topic X, and enough readers know who you are because of those efforts, one could argue you're on your way to building a platform around X. Number two is a bit tougher but you could measure your efforts by traffic levels to a blog, email subscription list growth, etc.

Hi Joe and everyone,

Wanted to mention that there is a great feature section in the May/June issue of Writer's Digest that covers the platform building, the online marketing plan and social networking. Hope it's helpful for your readers as a follow-up conversation to this interview.
