I am an author and user of Smashwords. I have tried publishing my book as an ebook with other sites and also as a PDF from my own site, but this is the best site I have found so far.

It is easy to use with the free Style Guide explaining what you need to do in order to upload your file. It then reformats that document into every different ebook format for you, so it cuts down the time for the author considerably. You do not need to be technically minded as you only load a simple Word document. It also has social bookmarking links making marketing easier. In addition, the site allows for non-US authors which many other restrict (crazy in this global village!). I tried to get onto the Kindle but was restricted as I am in Australia, so this allows me to be in Kindle format.
The coupon functionality is also great as it allows special, time limited offers for marketing. There is also a free marketing guide that offers tips to help you spread the word.

So I am a fan of Smashwords!
